Fox Footy has signalled it’s ready to match the intensity of the on-field action this season, collaborating with one of the world’s most popular heavy metal bands, Byron Bay-born Parkway Drive, to re-record the iconic Fox Footy theme song.
Recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year with Grammy-nominated producer Zakk Cervini, who has worked with the likes of Blink-182, Limp Bizkit, Aviici and 5 Seconds of Summer, the song will debut on AFL360 tonight, Tuesday, 4 March. The band also came together under lights in the centre of Marvel Stadium last month to shoot a special promotional video.
The Fox Footy theme song has become instantly recognisable since it debuted in 2017 with previous musicians and artists to collaborate on the track including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Spoonbill. With three ARIA Award wins, three #1 ARIA Album debuts and six ARIA Gold-certified albums, Parkway Drive are the latest to bring their unique sound and star power to the track.
Fox Sports Head of Creative, Charlie Lambert, said: “We are going all in on Fox Footy this year with the best talent in the game, brand new sets, new graphics and new and expanded rights. If you’ve got the best product on the screen, you need the best music and that’s where Parkway Drive came in.
“Footy and heavy metal may not be a partnership many would expect, but we pride ourselves on producing the type of coverage that has fans on the edge of their seats, and now we have the music to match.”
Lead vocalist Winston McCall said: “When you start out as a really tiny band from Byron you definitely don’t expect to be standing in Marvel Stadium, given the opportunity to do something like this. It’s a really awesome collaboration and I’m glad that our music can do justice to it.
“The connection between music and sport is absolutely undeniable. To be able to have a tune that is as iconic as the Fox Footy theme tune and weave what we do through that, we can 100% see how it works to be able to heighten the entire atmosphere. Music lifts everything up to a whole other level, from something that is already exciting to something that’s truly epic.”
